In 1990, Dan Harpole, then Assistant Director at Centrum, suggested that PTMSC
and Centrum collaborate on a new residential program for youth that would
combine marine biology, the arts and environmental concerns. Several months of
planning resulted in the design and curriculum for Water World, a five-day
program that has been offered statewide every year since 1990. It continues to
be one of the most popular youth programs for both Centrum and PTMSC.
Each year, 50-70 fourth and fifth
graders from schools around the state have direct hands-on experiences in the
labs, studios, beaches and bluffs at Fort
Worden State
Park. As
they learn science, they simultaneously express their perceptions and learning
in drawing, sculpture, writing and movement, working with professional artists
in both the field and studio.
This is one of 30 reasons to give $30 to celebrate 30 years.
